GSM shows up on every spec sheet and every product listing, but it is one of those numbers that is easy to skim past without really knowing what it means for your print job. Here is what it actually tells you, and when it is worth paying attention to.
What GSM actually measures
GSM stands for grams per square metre. It is a measure of paper weight, not thickness, though the two usually move together. A higher GSM generally means a heavier, sturdier sheet, while a lower GSM means a lighter, thinner one. You will sometimes see thickness listed separately in microns or mil, which is worth checking too since two papers with the same GSM can still feel quite different depending on how dense the material is.
Why weight matters for your job
Handling and durability
Heavier papers are more forgiving to handle, mount, and display without creasing or tearing. If a print is going into a frame, onto a display board, or somewhere it will be handled a lot, a higher GSM gives you more room for error.
Show-through
Lighter papers can let ink show through to the other side, or let whatever is behind the print show through the front. This matters more for banners and signage viewed with light behind them, and less for something that will be mounted flat against a wall or board.
Curl and feed reliability
Very light papers can curl more in humidity or heat, and can occasionally cause feed issues in some printers, particularly on long unattended print runs. Heavier stock tends to feed and lie flatter.
Cost and volume
Weight is one of the main drivers of cost. For high-volume, everyday jobs like technical drawings or working proofs, a lighter, more affordable paper usually gets the job done without paying for weight you do not need.
A rough guide across the range
Weights vary by product family, but as a general guide:
- Light, around 80 to 90 g/m²: everyday bond and coated papers, built for volume and cost-efficiency on technical drawings, working comps, and CAD output. See Bond & Coated Papers.
- Mid-range, around 160 to 200 g/m²: photo and production papers where you want a bit more substance and better ink hold-out. See Photographic Papers.
- Heavy, around 260 to 280 g/m²: premium and professional photo papers, built for gallery-quality prints that need to feel substantial in the hand.
- Very heavy, 380 g/m² and up: canvas and fine art materials, where weight and texture are part of the finished look. See Fine Art Printing Materials.
GSM is not the whole story
Weight is a good starting signal, but it is not the only thing that determines how a paper performs. Finish (gloss, satin, matte), coating, and ink compatibility all matter just as much for the final result. A heavier paper with the wrong finish for your lighting conditions will not necessarily look better than a lighter one with the right finish. It is worth reading GSM alongside the rest of the spec sheet rather than on its own.
Quick way to decide
If the print needs to be handled a lot, displayed close up, or feel substantial, lean heavier. If it is a high-volume job where cost and speed matter more than feel, a lighter paper is usually the smarter choice.
