It is a common assumption that a good sign material will work anywhere, but indoor and outdoor jobs actually call for quite different things. Get this wrong and you either pay more than you need to for an indoor job, or end up with an outdoor sign that fades, curls, or falls apart within weeks.
Indoor signage, prioritise look and feel
Indoor environments are controlled, no rain, no direct sun, no wind. That means you can prioritise colour accuracy, finish, and presentation over toughness. Coated papers, satin and gloss photo papers, and adhesive vinyls in a matte or satin finish all perform well indoors and tend to look sharper up close.
Common indoor jobs: retail POS displays, office signage, event backdrops, exhibition graphics.

Outdoor signage, prioritise durability
Outdoor materials need to handle UV exposure, moisture, temperature swings, and general wear without fading or degrading. This is where you move into purpose built banner materials, weatherproof adhesive vinyls, and films designed for outdoor life.
Common outdoor jobs: shopfront signage, vehicle graphics, construction hoarding, outdoor banners and flags.

What about materials that go both ways?
Some materials are rated for both indoor and outdoor use, but it is worth checking the specific product listing or certification documents rather than assuming. If a job is borderline, for example a job that starts indoors but might be moved outside later, it is usually safer to choose the outdoor rated option from the start.
