Choosing the right paper for your print job

With so many wide format media options out there, it is easy to get stuck before you even start printing. The good news is you do not need to know every product on the market, you just need to know what job you are printing for. Once you have that, the right paper narrows down fast.

Here is a simple way to think about it.

Start with your job, not the paper

Indoor signage and point of sale

If your print is going up inside a store, office, or event space, you want something that looks sharp under lighting and holds its colour without needing heavy duty weatherproofing. Coated papers and photo papers in a satin or gloss finish are the usual go to here, they give you crisp detail and strong colour for POS displays, retail signage, and indoor banners.

Good place to start: Photographic Papers collection or HP Everyday Instant-dry Satin Photo Paper for anything that needs to really pop.

Outdoor signage and banners

Outdoor jobs need to survive sun, rain, and handling, so this is where you move into vinyl, banner materials, and weather resistant films. If it is going outside for more than a day or two, durability matters more than anything else.

Good place to start: Banner & Sign Materials collection or Self-adhesive Materials for anything going onto a shopfront or vehicle.

Photographic and fine art prints

For anything image heavy, exhibition prints, portfolios, or fine art reproductions, you want a media built for colour accuracy and detail, not just general purpose printing. This is where satin, gloss, and canvas finishes really earn their keep.

Good place to start: Photographic Papers collection or Fine Art Printing Materials if you are after a canvas or matte finish.

Technical and CAD drawings

If you are printing plans, schematics, or technical drawings, you are less concerned with colour vibrancy and more with clean lines, consistent feed through the printer, and a media that will not jam on high volume jobs. Bond and coated papers are built for exactly this.

Good place to start: Bond & Coated Papers collection or Technical Papers.

Not sure which printer you have?

Not every media works with every printer, and getting this wrong is one of the most common (and avoidable) mistakes. If you already know your HP printer model, check our printer compatibility charts to see which materials are built for it. If you are not sure what to look for, our team can help you match it up, just get in touch.

Still not sure? Request a sample

Sometimes the easiest way to decide is to hold it in your hand. Request a free HP media sample book and see how the paper looks and feels before you commit to a full roll.
