HP photo paper gloss satin matte finishes

Choosing photo paper: gloss, satin or matte?

Gloss, satin or matte? It is one of the first questions that comes up whenever photo paper is on the order, and the finish you choose changes how the final print looks and feels just as much as the image itself. Here is how to pick the right one for the job.

Gloss: maximum vibrancy and shine

Gloss photo paper gives you the widest colour gamut and the deepest blacks, with a reflective finish that makes colours pop under good lighting. It is the go-to choice when the print needs to grab attention, retail graphics, point-of-purchase displays, and photography where impact matters more than subtlety.

The trade-off is glare. Under bright or uneven lighting, gloss can reflect light back at the viewer, which can wash out detail from certain angles. For most retail and display settings this is a non-issue, but it is worth keeping in mind for spaces with harsh overhead lighting.

Options across the range: HP Universal Gloss Photo Paper for reliable everyday results, and HP Premium Instant-dry Gloss Photo Paper for a wider colour gamut and richer contrast when the job calls for it.

Satin: rich colour without the glare

Satin sits between gloss and matte. You still get strong colour depth and richness, but the finish resists fingerprints and handles better under gallery or showroom lighting without the same reflective glare as gloss. It is a dependable all-rounder, which is why it is one of the most popular finishes we sell.

Options across the range: HP Universal Satin Photo Paper for consistent, presentation-quality prints, HP Premium Instant-dry Satin Photo Paper for extra colour depth, and HP Professional Instant-dry Satin Photo Paper for the most demanding gallery or showroom work.

Matte: elegant, non-reflective, easy to display

Matte photo paper trades some of the vibrancy of gloss for a soft, non-reflective finish that looks equally good under gallery lighting or a shop floor. Because there is no glare to manage, matte is often the safest choice for spaces with mixed or unpredictable lighting, and it gives fine art and photography prints a more understated, premium look.

HP Premium Matte Photo Paper delivers highly-saturated, photo-realistic colour despite the matte surface, so you are not giving up as much punch as you might expect.

What about Everyday, Universal, Premium and Professional?

Alongside the finish, HP photo papers come in a few different quality tiers. Everyday and Universal papers are built for reliable, cost-effective results on high-volume jobs. Premium steps up the colour gamut and contrast for work where quality matters more than cost. Professional is the top tier, built for gallery and showroom-grade output where every detail counts. Matching the tier to the job is just as important as matching the finish.

Quick way to decide

If the print needs to grab attention under good lighting, go gloss. If it needs to look great under mixed or unpredictable lighting without fingerprints showing, go satin. If you want a soft, premium, glare-free finish, go matte.
